Not all immigrants to America are the same. People come from different countries, different cultures and different economic backgrounds.
Likewise, there are many different types of immigration statuses in America. From citizens to refugees, many different classifications exist for newcomers to American shores.
Born in the United States, but raised elsewhere
If you were born in the United States you are an American citizen, even if you grew up in a different country. You may also be a citizen if one of your parents was born in the United States.
Moved to the United States to seek work
If you moved to the United States to seek work, you most likely have a green card (which isn’t really green). You are a Lawful Permanent Resident and can travel in and out of the country at will.
Moved to the United States for school or transferred for your job
Classified as a Temporary Visitor, you have a visa that allows you to stay for a specified period of time to complete your goal. Tourists that are here to visit are also issued visas, but for shorter periods of time.
Moved to the United States seeking asylum
If you moved here to avoid persecution you are a refugee in America. After one year, refugees may be eligible to become Lawful Permanent Residents of the United States.
There are many other classifications for alien residents of the United States beyond these most common designations. The melting pot of America has many ways to welcome new residents from other countries.
