On Behalf of Palacios Law Group

If you want to live and work in the U.S. permanently, you may want to apply for and obtain a Green Card. When you have a Green Card, you receive official authorization to remain in the U.S. without the risk of deportation.

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, there are several ways you can obtain a Green Card. For example, you can apply on an individual basis, receive sponsorship from your employer or a family member or seek asylee or refugee status.

Applying for a Green Card

There is a general process you must follow when applying for a Green Card. Typically, this process starts when someone files an immigration petition for you. When U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services approves this petition, you can move forward and file a Green Card application.

Once you complete this application, you must attend a biometrics appointment where you provide a signature, fingerprints and photos. Then, you attend an interview prior to receiving an application decision.

Awaiting a decision

While you await a decision on your Green Card application, update your address with USCIS as soon as possible if you move. If you do not notify USCIS about your change of address, you may not receive important updates about your application status.

Applying for a Green Card can be a lengthy process, and you must follow each step with precision to prevent delays or problems with your initial application. To prevent issues obtaining a Green Card, ensure you meet all eligibility requirements prior to applying and provide all needed information in a timely manner.
